Our story

It started with two dogs — and a goodbye we weren’t ready for.

The true story of Hartley, the dog who made another dog feel safe — the day the house went quiet, and the second heartbeat we built so Cooper could rest again.

They were never apart

Cooper came to us a rescue — a dog who’d already learned that people leave.

He arrived braced for it to happen again: flinching when we reached for the door, pacing, unable to settle, certain the next goodbye was always coming. Then there was Hartley — gentle, steady, calm in a way Cooper had never managed to be. She was the calm he borrowed.

Where she went, he followed. When she slept, he slept — curled into her side, an ear against her chest. The warm weight of her. The slow, steady drum of her heart. For the first time, a dog who trusted no one trusted her. That was how he knew he was safe.

Then we lost her

One day she was here. The next, the house was too quiet — and something in Cooper went quiet with it.

There’s no gentle way to say it, so we won’t try. He paced. He waited at the door for a friend who wasn’t coming back. A dog who’d already been left once was being left all over again — and the warm body and steady heartbeat he’d fallen asleep against every night were simply gone. He stopped settling. He stopped sleeping.

We were grieving her too. Watching him grieve broke us a second time.

What he was really missing

It wasn’t only Hartley. It was a presence — another heartbeat in the dark, telling him he wasn’t alone.

We couldn’t bring her back. But maybe, we thought, we could give that back.

So we made him a second heartbeat

The first one was for Cooper: a soft companion with a real, rhythmic heartbeat. The first night we tucked it against him, his breathing slowed. He sank into it. He slept — and so, finally, did we.

We named it Hartley. After her, and after the heart of what she’d given him. Then we thought of every other dog lying awake, missing a heartbeat of their own — so we made more.

What we believe

A few promises we don’t break.

We’re honest

No comfort object is a magic fix for every dog, and we’ll never pretend otherwise.

We back it

Every Hartley comes with a 30-night comfort guarantee.

We keep it safe

Skin-friendly, non-toxic materials — no hard plastic, no choking hazards.

Who we made it for

The dog grieving a companion who’s gone. The rescue braced to be left again. The senior who can’t settle once the lights go out. The puppy far from the litter for the first time. The velcro dog two steps behind you, everywhere you go. If you’re picturing your dog right now — Hartley was made for you both.

Hartley’s the reason

She was real.

The gentle one who made an anxious dog feel safe. We carry her name on everything we make — and the one thing she gave Cooper: a heartbeat to curl into.
